Our History

Union Safe® was founded in 1978 by John Smith, a third-generation safe maker. Growing up, John learned the art of safe making from his father and grandfather. At age 23, he decided to strike out on his own and start his own safe company.

John started small, initially operating out of his home garage. He focused on building high-quality safes tailored to the needs of gun owners and collectors. His goal was simple – provide gun enthusiasts with secure and reliable storage to protect their valuable firearms.

In the early 1980s, John moved production to a small workshop and began selling his safes locally. Word of the superior craftsmanship and durability of Union Safe® products soon spread. When John took Union Safe® products to his first trade show in 1984, he sold out his entire inventory!

Bolstered by this early success, John invested in expanding production capabilities. He brought on skilled metal workers and engineers to join his team. By 1990, Union Safe® had 20 employees and a 5,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.

Over the next decade, Union Safe® experienced tremendous growth. We introduced innovative features like our patented Pry-StopTM anti-theft door. This helped establish Union Safe® as an industry innovator. Our expanded product line allowed us to meet the needs of military, law enforcement, businesses, and homeowners.

Today, Union Safe® operates a state-of-the-art 100,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant. We employ over 200 American workers and produce over 50,000 safes annually. After 40+ years, our commitment to excellence remains as strong as ever.

Our Facility

Our company headquarters and manufacturing facility is located in Phoenix, Arizona. This modern 100,000 sq. ft. plant utilizes the latest technology and equipment to produce our wide range of security products.

Our team of skilled craftsmen expertly transform raw steel into high-quality, rugged safes. We perform metal fabrication, welding, powder coating, and final assembly all under one roof. This vertical integration allows us to closely monitor quality from start to finish.

Our in-house engineering department employs industrial designers, mechanical engineers, and metallurgists. This talented team is constantly innovating and finding ways to improve our products. Their expertise in materials science, security design, and manufacturing ensures our safes offer the ideal balance of security, fire protection, and convenience.

Our factory operates the latest precision laser cutting equipment and CNC machining centers. This automation allows us to maintain tight tolerances during manufacturing. It also enables rapid prototyping and testing of new designs.

We also make environmental sustainability a priority. Our factory runs on 100% solar power. We use recycled materials in our packaging. And we employ zero waste manufacturing techniques to minimize environmental impact.
